You Read to Me, I'll Read to You:
Very Short Stories to Read Together

WRITTEN BY

Hoberman, Mary Ann. (2001). You Read to Me, I'll Read to You. Boston: Little, Brown, & Co.

This unique book “in two voices” uses rhyme, rhythm, and repetition to invite two people to read together about family, friendships, and pets. The very short, humorous stories greatly appeal to young readers.

Here's a book with something new--

NOTE TO TEACHERS
This book is infectious! It invites children to want to perform the stories and create new written and illustrated versions of their own. When children write new stories in this format, color code the lines, as demonstrated in the book, so children can see and follow the different parts clearly.

You read to me!

I'll read to you!

We'll read each page to one another--

You'll read one side.

I the other.

Activities for Students

GRADE LEVELS: K through 3

Fluency

This book provides an excellent opportunity to develop fluency as children enjoy repeatedly reading and performing these stories.

Rhymes

In the spirit of the book, students write rhymes about who to read to and where, when, how, and why to read.

Who

"I'll read to Jeff."

"I'll read to a bear."

Where

"I'll read in bed.

"I'll read in a chair."

Class Book

Read together and perform the short story “I Like”. Then use the pattern for students to work in pairs creating their own “I Like” stories.

Readers Theater

Build upon the children’s pleasant experiences with these stories by beginning readers theater with your class. One engaging example of readers theater is posted on my web site, www.bertiekingore.com. In Literature Celebrations: Catalysts to High-Level Book Responses, two additional readers theater scripts are shared along with procedures for performing and creating additional readers theater productions.

Book Connection

Check your school library for a copy of Paul Fleischman’s book: Joyful Noise, Poems for Two Voices. This Newbery Award book consists of whimsical illustrations and poems about insects that can be performed very effectively.
